Beautiful Confusion: Yoyo & All That Jazz
After Federico Fellini won the Palme D'or in 1960 for LA DOLCE VITA, there was only one thing on his mind. What next? It was this confusion and lack of clarity that guided him into making his next film, the seminal 1963 work of metafiction that was "8½".
In this class, we will examine and reflect on the work of two filmmakers who used '8½' as a prism to sort out the confusion present during dark periods of their own lives. One an underseen genius, the other a master at the height of his creative powers. Both seeking to try and answer the question: "What next?"
It is highly encouraged that students watch Fellini's 8½ before the first class.
Films:
12/3: YOYO (Pierre Étaix, 1965, 98 minutes)
12/10: ALL THAT JAZZ (Bob Fosse, 1979, 123 minutes)
This class will be taught by MMU assistant instructor Zach Peters.
Each class will begin with a short lecture, followed by a screening of the film, after which an instructor-led discussion will take place.
Class size will be limited to 18.
