CARMEN JONES

CARMEN JONES
For our February Cinema Classics screening, we’re proud to present CARMEN JONES!

CARMEN JONES (1954) In this sultry tale of burning passion and doomed romance, the electrifying Dorothy Dandridge stars as Carmen Jones, a parachute factory worker who yearns to live “the good life.” Harry Belafonte plays Joe, a young, straight-arrow military officer during WWII, who crosses paths with the titular character and is swept up in her all-consuming desire to escape her unhappy life. CARMEN JONES is a musical unlike any other, featuring Oscar Hammerstein II’s classic songs reworked from George Bizet’s opera Carmen.  The superb supporting cast includes Pearl Bailey, Brock Peters, Diahann Carroll and Olga James. But it’s Dandridge’s sizzling performance, which would lead to her becoming the first person of color to receive a Best Actress Oscar nomination, that makes this a truly groundbreaking film for the ages.
