Crash Course | Brotherhood & Bullets: The Films of Johnny To

The Hong Kong film industry launched the careers of many filmmakers who would shape Hollywood blockbuster cinema in the 90s. One of these auteurs stayed true to his roots and created personal stories within his own country's industry: Johnnie To. Dabbling in nearly every genre, these films are filled with gorgeous visuals, piercing social/political commentary, and moving character arcs.

In this crash course, we'll focus on four of his films: a one bad-night noir thriller, a martial arts comedy-drama, a heroic bloodshed neo-western action film, and his first gritty crime film shot entirely in mainland China.

Films:

12/1: PTU (2003, 85 min)

12/8: THROW DOWN (2004, 95 min)

12/15: EXILED (2006, 110 min)

12/22: DRUG WAR (2012, 107 min)

This class will be taught by Movie Madness staffer Kendall Beck. MMU Crash Course classes offer a low-intensity way to explore a filmmaker or genre, in a friendly environment shared with fellow film lovers. Unlike our MMU seminars, Crash Courses offer a more casual approach. There’s no formal lecture or discussion, but films are curated and presented by staff experts.

Enrollment is limited to 18 students.
