Disturbing Dinner Discussions

Disturbing Dinner Discussions

Pull up a chair and join us for a three course meal of relationship-dynamic thrillers this holiday season! Whether dining with a partner’s out-of-touch family at their isolated estate, feasting with fast friends on an international getaway, or supping with a group of estranged friends at an ex’s home, our protagonists will all be challenged in their willingness to prioritize self-preservation and justice over keeping the peace with loved ones. In turn, each film invites us to consider where we ourselves draw the line between discomfort and danger.

In this class, we’ll chew on the ways social and/or class identities contribute to each story. We’ll also discuss the genres and subgenres present in each film and answer the question: “is it a thriller, or is it a horror?!”

Films:

12/3: GET OUT (2017, 104 min)

12/10: SPEAK NO EVIL (2022, 97 min)

12/17: THE INVITATION (2015, 100 min)

This class will be taught by MMU Instructor MJ Jackson, a lover of “dark cinema” and expanded representation in film characters and filmmakers alike. She previously taught the MMU course on The Man, The Myth, The Forbidden Legend: Candyman.

Each class will begin with a short lecture, followed by a screening of the film, after which an instructor-led discussion will take place.

Class size will be limited to 18.
