Sugar Hill
Diana “Sugar” Hill seeks help from voodoo priestess Mama Maitresse to summon the Lord of the Dead, Baron Samedi, after her boyfriend is murdered by a group of mobsters. Her quest for retribution eventually catches the attention of her former boyfriend, police Lt Valentine.
Directed by Paul Maslansky and written by Tim Kelly, SUGAR HILL (1974, 91min) is a blaxploitation horror film with elements of African culture and Black southern gothic. Resembling BLACULA (1972) and FOXY BROWN (1974), this film is one of the earliest examples of a Black female protagonist who is assertive and powerful.
In this class, we will explore themes of revenge, power dynamics, and Black empowerment.
This class will be taught by MMU Education Instructor, Kristina Mucker. Her previous classes include She’s Gotta Have It (1986), The Blackening (2022), Prozac Nation (2001) and the multi-week courses Black Southern Gothic and Absent Narratives: Black Queer Romance.
Class size will be limited to 18.
