True Love: A Valentine to Rob Reiner
The overarching theme of Rob Reiner’s adventure romance THE PRINCESS BRIDE (1987) can be summed up in the words of Miracle Max, played by Billy Crystal: “True love is the greatest thing in the world.”
With his subsequent film, the rom-com WHEN HARRY MET SALLY… (1989), Reiner intended to take a far more cynical approach to romantic relationships. Then something unexpected happened while filming: the director fell in love, inspiring a happier ending for his main characters.
Just in time for Valentine’s Day, this two-week course pays tribute to Reiner’s romantic side by comparing these iconic, highly quotable films from the late ‘80s. We’ll explore their differing takes on romance, marriage, and gender roles, and notice where the director’s own story found its way onscreen.
