Jesus Shows You the Way to the Highway

With his second feature, JESUS SHOWS YOU THE WAY TO THE HIGHWAY (2019, 83 min), filmmaker Miguel Llansó created a film that is  delightfully audacious in both concept and execution.

The year is 2035, and Special Agent Gagano dreams of leaving the CIA to open a business with his wife Malin. Before he can hand in his resignation. However, a strange cyber virus attacks Psychobook, the CIA's operating system, forcing Gagano to enter cyberspace via virtual reality to combat the threat. Before long, however, the virus starts to reach out into the real world, destabilising the fragile socio-political order for its own ends, and Gagano, trapped in the VR world, must find a way out before it’s too late. 

In this class, we’ll discuss genre and the expectations and trappings that are sometimes inherent in a genre film.  We’ll dive deeper to explore how the subversion and remixing of those expectations on the part of a clever filmmaker can yield a truly unique and blissfully bizarre film. 

This class will be taught by MMU instructor Satchel Stinson, whose previous classes include Twentieth Century Trauma: Post-Cold War Eastern European Films and Greener Grass.

Class size will be limited to 18.
