Movie Madness Overview
Founded in 1991 by Mike Clark, Movie Madness has grown over the years to include 90,000+ titles encompassing new releases, childhood classics, foreign films from more than 65 countries, an extensive LGBTQ section, and VHS and cult rarities.
In 2017, when Mike was ready to retire, he approached his friends at the nonprofit Hollywood Theatre to see if they’d be interested in purchasing Movie Madness. The Hollywood saw an immediate alignment with their mission of preserving and promoting the art of film, and jumped at the chance to help save a true Portland institution.
After a successful crowdfunding campaign raised more than $315,000, the Hollywood took over ownership of Movie Madness in January 2018. (Mike retains ownership of the film prop collection, which he has generously loaned to the Hollywood for ongoing display.)
Movie Madness’ collection is an irreplaceable cultural resource. The Hollywood Theatre is dedicated to preserving these films and keeping them accessible to movie lovers in Portland and beyond.
