Youth in Revolt: the Global ‘68

Youth in Revolt: the Global ‘68

In the late 1960s people rose up to fight against the old power structures and for a more just society, only to be met with limited progress if not retrenchment by the mid 1970s. While much critical attention has been given to the events of May ‘68 in France, youth worldwide rebelled against the system in the late 1960s, and filmmakers across the globe responded in unique ways.

This course will examine how four different filmmakers from four different countries engaged with youthful and often political revolt in the late sixties. We will travel from a British boarding school to the streets of Chicago, from a historical allegory in Hungary to a metacinematic experiment in Japan as we explore the cinematic global ‘68.
