Man With a Movie Camera

Cost:  $22 ($18 members)

Monday, September 8th

Inspired by the Industrial Age and harnessing the potential of movement, MAN WITH A MOVIE CAMERA (1929, 68 min) is an experimental silent documentary by Dziga Vertov. Coming out of the Soviet Union's initial interactions with film as a medium, Vertov sought to discover what cinematic technology could truly be capable of, employing a staggering range of visual techniques to explore the relationship between humans and machinery.

Named by Sight and Sound in 2014 as the best documentary of all time, MAN WITH A MOVIE CAMERA persists in its relevance as the relationship between humanity and our technology continues to define human interaction.  In this class, we’ll discuss how Vertov’s film engages the viewer despite the lack of a traditional narrative, and how the visual techniques employed lend themselves to reveal Vertov’s self-reflexive thematic concerns.

This class will be taught by MMU Education Instructor Zoe Gillian, whose recent classes include Exploring Portland Through Film, Twisted Genius: David Fincher and Whatever Happened To Baby Jane?  Zoe also created the Persistence of Vision program.

Class size will be limited to 18.
