Essential Queer Docs: Vito Russo & The Celluloid Closet

Cost: $22 ($18 members)
Based on film historian & gay activist Vito Russo's 1970s performative film lectures & 1981 book, THE CELLULOID CLOSET traces the history of depictions of homosexuality in the first near-century of cinema which helped create a rhetoric for surfacing the coded and not-so-coded queerness in media.
In this class, we’ll learn about the complex journey from book to documentary and celebrate the life and work of Iconic Queer Ancestor Vito Russo. Both a unique artifact of the mid-1990s and a potently relevant testament to the importance of uncovering, preserving, learning, creating, and sharing our histories, THE CELLULOID CLOSET is a must-watch for the queer film lover.
This class will be taught by MMU Instructor Max Swanson, a filmmaker/performer, writer, educator, and organizer based in Portland, OR.
Class size will be limited to 18.
