Movie Madness

Jonathan Livingston Seagull

JONATHAN LIVINGSTON SEAGULL (1973, 99 min) follows a real life trained seagull and his narrative journey as an outcast from his flock as he ascends high into the sky. Intended to be a simplistic adaptation of the novella of the same name, the film was clouded by interpersonal creative squabbles and several lawsuits, including one from Neil Diamond who wrote the soundtrack album.

Upon release, the film was considered a commercial and critical failure, despite several Academy nominations.  Together we will be re-examining this experimental feat of nature photography while exploring the behind-the-scenes details in this nearly forgotten film.

This class will be taught by MMU Instructor Zoe Gillian, whose recent classes include Man With A Movie Camera, What’s Up, Doc?, Exploring Portland Through Film, and Twisted Genius: David Fincher.

Enrollment is limited to 18 students.
