Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India

Join us as we dive deep into the Oscar-nominated Indian blockbuster LAGAAN: ONCE UPON A TIME IN INDIA (2001, 233 minutes), a tale of rebellion set within the structure of the underdog sports film.
Set during the Victorian era of Britain’s colonization, the film follows a young man whose small acts of rebellion have placed his village in the crosshairs of a cruel British officer. To avoid the punishment of paying triple their already exorbitant taxes (lagaan), the village must rally to beat the Brits at their own game…in this case, cricket.
Class will include a post-film discussion of the making of the film, the usage of the underdog sports tropes as a carrier for political themes, and other films focusing on Britain's colonization of India. A ten-minute intermission will be included between acts of the film.
This class will be taught by Portland comics writer Brian Joines, creator of such works as Backtrack, Krampus!, and I.M.A.G.I.N.E. Agents.
Please note that this class will be longer than usual as the film is 3 hours and 44 min.
