Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Take One
Cost: $22 ($18 members)
William Greaves' SYMBIOPSYCHOTAXIPLASM (1968, 75 min) is a film apart, an entire a league of its own in the history of cinema, and a personal all-time favorite film of the instructor! This dizzying and deftly constructed layercake of documentary, fiction, and experiment unspools around the central figure of Greaves -- as he directs screen test after screen test while traipsing across Central Park, his increasingly beleaguered crew (and the audience along with them) begin to question the shape and intent of the film itself.
Join us as we dive into this great cinematic piece of jazz, plumbing the nature of film, performance, identity, representation, and power in ways specifically historical to its moment of 1968, and that resound across time and space to vibrate the self-reflexive chords of our contemporary moment.
This class will be taught by MMU Instructor Max Swanson, a filmmaker/performer, writer, educator, and organizer based in Portland, OR.
Class will begin with a short lecture, followed by a screening of the film, after which an instructor-led discussion will take place.
Class size will be limited to 18.
