Songs From the Second Floor
Roy Andersson’s SONGS FROM THE SECOND FLOOR (2000, 100 min) is a meandering series of bleak vignettes, humorously engaging with the everyday misfortunes that come with being a person at the turn of the twenty-first century. After Andersson spent 25 years of his career making commercials, SONGS FROM THE SECOND FLOOR was a return to filmmaking, precisely crafted from the ground up with non-actors and handbuilt sets. It was released to critical acclaim and went on to win the Jury Prize at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival.
This class will explore the utter scale and detail behind the project, Andersson’s life and influences, and will be discussing humanity in late-stage capitalism.
This class will be taught by MMU Instructor Zoe Gillian, whose recent classes include Man With A Movie Camera, What’s Up, Doc?, Exploring Portland Through Film, and Twisted Genius: David Fincher.
Enrollment is limited to 18 students.
