Spotlight on Edward Yang’s Taipei
As one of the main Taiwanese New Wave directors, Edward Yang created indelible films capturing the colorful spirit of Taipei.
In this 4 week class, we’ll watch and discuss films featuring characters who range from tragic to comedic as they grapple with historic and cultural disillusionment in a rapidly globalized city. We will also explore how different cinematic techniques enhanced his humanistic narratives.

11/10: MAHJONG (1996, 121 mins)
11/17: CONFUCIAN CONFUSION (1994, 125 mins)
11/24: THE TERRORIZERS (1986, 110 mins)
This class will be taught by Jenny Lee whose previous classes have explored the films of Satyajit Ray, Yasujiro Ozu, Krzysztof Kieslowski, and more.
