The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie
This class examines Luis Bunuel's 1972 surrealist dark comedy, THE DISCREET CHARM OF THE BOURGEOISIES (102 min). The story of a group of friends who meet several times for dinner but never actually get to eat becomes a fable of people who think they have the world by the tail when all they really have is the tail.
We’ll discuss how Bunuel's life, his friendships with Salvador Dali and Gabriel Garcia Lorca, and the rise of fascism in Spain all went into the psychic blender that became this masterpiece of cinema.
This class will be taught by Mark Russell, author and a comic book writer known for his work on DC and Marvel heroes such as Superman, Batman, and the Fantastic Four, as well as his work on titles like The Flintstones, Second Coming, and Not All Robots.
Enrollment is limited to 18.
