The People’s Joker

Cost: $22 ($18 members)
Just in time for Pride Month, it’s the most revolutionary superhero movie of all time: THE PEOPLE’S JOKER! This unauthorized, DIY, and very trans parody reimagines both the coming-of-age film, and the DC Comics canon, through the lens of writer-director Vera Drew’s own life. Weaving autobiography with homage, Drew stars as a closeted transfemme comedian looking to make it in the big city of Gotham, alongside a star-studded ensemble cast of cameos.
In this one-session class, we’ll learn about the fight to get the film distributed, explore the modern myth-making of superhero fan fiction as high art, and honor the trans magic of biohacking the narrative.
This class will be taught by Max Swanson, a filmmaker/performer, writer, educator, and organizer based in Portland, OR. They currently also teach at NW Doc and PSU, and work as a freelance story consultant.
Class size will be limited to 18.
