The Queer Magical Girl: Adolescence of Utena

The Queer Magical Girl returns with ADOLESCENCE OF UTENA (1999, 100 min). This class will once again view magical girls through the lens of queer theory and how friendship intertwines with love. ADOLESCENCE OF UTENA helped build the foundation for queer magical girls. While the original show, Revolutionary Girl Utena, left the queer relationships to be (heavily) implied, ADOLESCENCE OF UTENA officially canonizes the queer relationships.

This class will explore themes such as teen-teen solidarity, heterotopias, compulsive heterosexuality, and urbanity vs. rurality. We will analyze how these themes impact the relationships in the film and the magical girl genre as a whole.

This class will be taught by filmmaker, editor, and festival coordinator Taylor Lee. She is also the founder and coordinator of the Comics Confluence Festival.

Enrollment is limited to 18.
