Zu: Warriors from the Magic Mountain

Zu: Warriors from the Magic Mountain

Tsui Hark is one of the Hong Kong ‘New Wave’ directors credited with changing the face of Hong Kong Cinema in the early 80s. His film, ZU: WARRIORS FROM THE MAGIC MOUNTAIN (1983, 98 min) is a mix of postmodern Eastern cinematic traditions, Hollywood special effects, comic book aesthetics, and ironic self-reflexivity, and when it was released, was unlike anything that audiences had seen before.

In this class, we’ll examine both the political and cinematic landscape of Hong Kong cinema in the early 80s and discover why Hark’s film had such an impact.  We’ll also look at the trajectory of Hark’s career both pre and post 1983, and reveal how his larger contributions to Hong Kong cinema re-energized an industry.

This class will be taught by Ted Hurliman, Director of Education at the Hollywood Theatre.

Class size will be limited to 18.
